Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is also known as Kabalega National Park which is popularly known for the world’s most powerful water falls in the world. It was gazetted as a game reserve in 1926 and later raised to a national park status in 1952. Murchison Falls National Park is one of the largest and oldest protected areas in Uganda covering an area of 5072 kmsq it also shares boundaries with Karuma and Bugungu wildlife reserve as well as Bundongo Forest home of chimpanzees and various primate species. The park is home to 76 species of mammals and over 400 bird species. The park is divided into two sections by the Victoria Nile that is the northern and southern section, the northern side is home to many wildlife animal species than the southern side.

Location of Murchison Falls National Park

The Park is located in the north western Uganda from the central Kampala it is about 5 to 6 hours drive, it borders the districts of Masindi, Nwoya, Kiryandongo and Bulisa. It lies on the north end of the Albertine Rift Valley where Bunyoro escarpment merges with the beautiful endless wilderness palm dotted savannah home of the Big four animals.

Murchison falls National Park is a home to different wildlife species; over 76 mammal and 451 bird species including the Buffaloes, Elephants, Jackson hartebeests, Antelopes, Lions, Kobs, Giraffes, Hyenas, Bushbucks, Shoebill stork and Warthogs among others. They are widely spread all over the Savannah grasslands, grazing or hunting for prey. This makes the park’s landscape so amazing for Wildlife viewing/game driving. The game drives can start very early in the morning at round 6:00am for chances of cats till evening, the game drives can be done at any time of the day and they are normally done in the Northern Part of the Park where the trails are as well as following the Victoria, Albert and Buligi Tracks. You will have chance of seeing the Hippos in water and on the shores, Crocodiles, Birds, other wildlife on the shores of the River as they drink water or even rest, and other Aquatic animals. Normally Launch Cruises are used and you will join other visitors and the guide will help spot and identify the animals as you take Pictures, record videos. The view of the falls while at the bottom is breathtaking and hearing the Roars of the falls as well.  The cruise takes 2hours though you can opt to pay more for extra hours.
